Whale Beach House, designed by Rachel Neeson and Nick Murcutt, has recived the Wilkinson Award for Residential Architecture, in the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2009 NSW Architecture Awards. This is the second win in three years for Neeson Murcutt Architects, and the couple now join an elite grup of architects to receive the award more than once, Glenn Murcutt, Australia’s best known architect, holds the record at six wins.
From Neeson Murcutt Architects:
The house is an extended family weekender organised over three levels that terrace with the slope. The project explores proximity and distance, invoking the special dualities of the site – the rock outcrops and native forest behind are given equal consideration to the front coastal panorama. Each room is considered almost autonomously, coordinated with site and view. Outdoor living spaces at each level are equally varied – house and landscape are integral. It is finely detailed and built by exceptional tradespeople.
