The idea “forest and fortress” comes from the literal meaning of the Chinese term for Luxembourg. The pavilion, built from steel, wood and glass, will be an open fortress around with greenery. The 15-meter-high main structure will resemble an ancient castle with large openings surrounded by medieval towers,
“All the materials are recyclable,” said the architect of the pavilion, Francois Valentiny. Also, the outside walls will be translucent, on which Chinese characters will be shown. The exhibition area of the pavilion is about 1,300 square meters. The downstairs hall will stage a satellite video show displaying live scenes from the country. “Visitors will be able to talk with Luxembourg people through satellite. And we will bring live programs of Luxembourg events here,” said Jeannot Krecke, the country’s Minister of the Economy and Foreign Trade.

Architectural exhibits in Millennium Park designed by London-based Zaha Hadid and Amsterdam-based Ben van Berkel of UNStudio emphasize the importance of boldly imagining a better future for all. Both are intended to echo the audacity of the 1909 Burnham Plan, which proclaimed, “What we as a people decide to do in the public interest we can and surely will bring to pass.”
The Burnham Pavilions will be open and free to the public in Millennium Park from June 19 through October 31, 2009.
BURNHAM PAVILIONS
The iconic centerpieces of the Burnham Plan Centennial will be two temporary architectural pavilions in Millennium Park. World renowned architects Zaha Hadid (London) and Ben van Berkel of UNStudio (UNStudio, Amsterdam) designed these bold Pavilions to echo the audacious future-looking images and words of the Burnham Plan: “What we as a people decide to do in the public interest we can and surely will bring to pass.”
The Pavilions will open to the public on June 19, 2009, when the Grant Park Symphony and Chorus will simultaneously premier a new work composed by Michael Torke called Plans that commemorates the words most often attributed to Daniel Burnham: “Make No Little Plans.” The pavilions will close on October 31, 2009, when they will be dismantled for re-use or recycling.
Partners for the Burnham Plan Pavilions include:
* The Art Institute of Chicago
* The Burnham Plan Centennial Committee
* City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs
* Illinois Institute of Technology
* Millennium Park, Inc.
* University of Illinois Chicago School of Architecture

Foster + Partners’ design for the UAE pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai Expo has broken ground. Drawing inspiration from the form of a sand dune, the pavilion is a reference to this symbolic feature of the desert landscape shared by each of the seven emirates.
The landscape and climate of the UAE are integral to Emirati culture. Like a sand dune, the pavilion appears rough and textured on the side that bears the full force of the wind and smooth on the other side. The northern elevation is more porous to admit natural light, while the southern elevation has a solid façade, to minimize solar gain. A stainless steel skin, treated to appear golden, encloses the jewel-like shell. Leer el resto de esta entrada »
