In Oaxaca, the artistic community has been a key player in the creation of a contemporary discourse and in the development of ideal spaces for the showcase of Mexican art and for its teaching. The institutions that provide the necessary infrastructure have been born that way, managing to optimize their resources and turning Oaxaca into an important center for the creation of the arts.

Fine Arts School - ROW Studio

The proposal for the Fine Arts School of the Universidad Autonoma Benito Juarez de Oaxaca (the state university of Oaxaca) aims to create all the necessary spaces for the teaching of all the necessary techniques and fields of study while preserving the green areas of the campus. The idea is to keep two activities that while different on their means, are virtually occupying the same space.  The slopes are an extension of the greenery from which the classrooms seem to appear, giving the impression that the space emerges as mounds similar to the primitive idea of the pyramid.

The complex has a northeast orientation which is considered ideal for the natural lighting of the classroom but also as a reference to the orientation of the “J building” or “observatory” of the archeological site of Monte Alban which is tilted on that same direction on comparison to the rest of the buildings of the ancient city.

This is an alternative proposal made as an exercise in contrast with the actual project already under construction.
