Downtown Des Moines is a continually evolving area that has experienced rapid growth in both residential and commercial construction. Downtown Des Moines has served as the central “hub” for the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART) since its inception. DART enlisted substance to develop a conceptual idea for a central transit hub to be located on the southern edge of downtown. The transit hub would consolidate all of the transfer functions of the transit system into one central and accessible location. Several options were explored to deliver upon the goals of the project. The final solution was chosen for the project consisting of a large “living” roof that is segmented to provide shelter for DART riders while allowing the maximum use of daylight. Approached from the south, the roof rises out of an earthern berm to a height of 40’ at its northern edge creating a symbolic and identifiable new entrance into downtown. All transfer functions for DART are organized under the sweeping roof.

Two buildings composed of glass curtainwall anchor the north edge of the project along Cherry Street. The linear building is proposed to house the retail and support spaces. The pavilion located on the northeast corner will house the customer service function of DART. A future building will allow rail-based transit to be integrated into the project.
