The annual eVolo Skyscraper Competition is a forum for the discussion, development, and promotion of innovative concepts for vertical density. It examines the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community, and the skyscraper and the city.
The exponential increase of the world’s population and its unprecedented shift from rural to urban areas has prompted hundreds of new developments without adequate urban planning and poor architectural design. The aim of this competition is to redefine what we understand as a skyscraper and initiate a new architectural discourse of economic, environmental, intellectual, and perceptual responsibility that could ultimately modify our cities and improve our way of life.
This is just a reminder to inform our readers that there is only one week left to register for the 2011 Skyscraper Competition. The registration deadline is January 11, 2011. You can find more information about the competition and the registration form in the following permanent link:

Considered as the profession’s highest honor that an individual can recive Fumihiko Maki has been awarded with the AIA Gold Medal. The Gold Medal honors an individual whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture. Maki will be honored at the 2011 AIA National Convention in New Orleans.
Maki is the 67th AIA Gold Medalist and joins the ranks of such visionaries as Thomas Jefferson, Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, Renzo Piano, I.M. Pei, Cesar Pelli, Santiago Calatrava and last year’s recipient, Peter Bohlin, FAIA. In recognition of his legacy to architecture, his name will be chiseled into the granite Wall of Honor in the lobby of the AIA headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Last Friday, Reiser + Umemoto, in collaboration with Fei and Cheng and Associates (Taipei), Ysrael A. Seinuk, PC (New York) and Arup (Hong Kong), were announced First Prize winners in the Kaohsiung Port and Cruise Service Center International Competition. Designs for the Zayed National Museum have been officially unveiled today by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom. Conceived as a monument and memorial to the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founding president of the UAE, the Museum will be the centrepiece of the Saadiyat Island Cultural District and will showcase the history, culture and more recently the social and economic transformation of the Emirates. UNStudio, in collaboration with DP Architects, has been selected from a shortlist of five practices to design Plot A of the SUTD (Singapore University of Technology and Design) campus.
Located on a site of 76,846 m2 and close to both Changi airport – Singapore’s principal airport – and the Changi Business Park, the SUTD will be Singapore’s fourth and most prestigious university. The Singapore University of Technology and Design will offer four key academic pillars: Architecture and Sustainable Design (ASD), Engineering Product Development (EPD), Engineering Systems and Design (ESD) and Information Systems Technology and Design (ISTD). The SUTD will be a driver of technological innovation and economic growth, with the new campus acting as both a catalyst and a conveyor for advancement, bringing together people, ideas and innovation. C. F. Møller Architects has won the competition for the new Kristiansund Opera and Culture Centre in Norway. Earlier this summer, the Danish firm was awarded a shared first prize with Space Group (Norway) and Brisac Gonzalez (UK) in the competition, but now the jury has finally selected C. F. The World Architecture Festival took place in Barcelona, Spain last week. Part of the annual festival program is the announcement of the WAF Award Winners. This year the title of World Building of the Year went to the MAXXI Museun in Rome, Zaha Hadid, which also won the 2010 Stirling Prize this year. After the break all the 2010 award winners.

Italian architects Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas in collaboration with Chinese Shenzhen General Institute of Architectural Design and Research has recently won the first prize in the “International Schematic Design Competition of Shenzhen Guosen Securities Tower”. Foster + Partners has won an international competition to design Luxembourg Royal Hamilius, a mixed-use development in the heart of Luxembourg City developed by Codic International. Designed to enhance and repair the urban fabric and create a suitable setting for the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the project comprises a department store, offices, shops, apartments, and a variety of social and civic spaces. Bjarke Ingels, architect and head of Danish practice BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group) has been announced as the 2010 laureate of the European Prize for Architecture. This prize is awarded annually by the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies.

The European Architecture Prize, established as a collaborative effort between The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies and The Chicago Athenaeum, is to be formally presented to Bjarke Ingels at “The City and The World: Madrid Symposium” November 4-7, 2010.
On Friday, November 5, at a Gala Diner and special Award’s Ceremony, together with Colegio Oficial de Arquitecturos de Madrid, Madrid’s Mayor Alberto Ruiz-Gallardón Jiménez will officially present Mr. Ingels with the lauris nobilis—symbolic of the European Prize.
Mr. Ingels will give a lecture preceding the dinner at 6:00PM at Centro de Turismo Colón, Plaza Colón, Madrid.
Back in August we told you that AutoCAD for mac would be ready and avaibale on Fall. Today its ready and Autodesk started shipping the software to all the users who preordered a copy back in August. As usual on all Autodesk products a free version can be downloaded by students, and a 30 day trial can be downloaded for professional users. Autodesk channel on youtube uploaded some videos with tutorials about the software, we like to share a couple of them with you where the new interface is showed and an easy explanation on how to use gestures with the magic mouse. Sir David Chipperfield CBE has been named today as the recipient of the Royal Gold Medal one of the world’s most prestigious architecture prizes. The medal, which recognises lifetime achievement, will be presented to Chipperfield on 10 February 2011 at a ceremony at the RIBA headquarters in London and the award is approved personally by the Queen. MAXXI, the National Museum of XXI Century Arts in Rome by Zaha Hadid Architects has won the coveted £20,000 RIBA Stirling Prize 2010, in association with The Architects Journal and Benchmark. The presentation of the UK’s premier architectural award took place at a special awards ceremony this evening (Saturday 2 October) at The Roundhouse in London, and was televised live on BBC Two’s The Culture Show at 6.30pm. Santiago Calatrava has unveiled his preliminary designs for Denver International Airport´s south terminal redevelopment program. The project includes the constuction of a signature rail bridge, a terminal tran station, a hotel (500 rooms), conference center and civic plaza. The rail station, plaza and hotel will form a highly integrated and dynamic complex. [More images after the break]
