Title: International Conference; BioDigital architecture and genetics
Location: ESARQ (UIC), Barcelona
Link out: Click here
Description: In the twenties and thirties of the 20th century, when some architects were disposed systematically to configure modern world, they did it stimulated for a cultural pressure, for a correct adaptation to new times, and fighting for minimum conditions of human existence. On the other hand, today the urgency is bigger. It is about the entire planetary subsistence. The question is not any more a simple caprice, neither an intellectual necessity, neither sensibility for losing less favoured people. Now, the necessity is global, without reservations of classes, races or religions. The whole planet is in front of danger of no-sustainability for all mankind.

By chance, now in this crucial moment, are offered new techniques of an enormous potential: biological techniques and digital techniques. And even fusion of both, in something that can be named biodigital architecture. One that has incorporated the advantages proportioned by the understanding of genetics in both ways, the biological and the digital way, that permit to face with hope some continuity also worthy, but this time a dignity for all The Earth.

Then, as the ones that made efforts to break with the ancient classical tradition to found the new modern tradition, we are in front of the challenge of creating the future tradition of biodigital and genetics. For this is necessary that people work on three key elements: research, teaching and profession. This is exactly what we have been doing in Barcelona from 2000, with the Genetic Architecture Research Group and Ph.D. Programme, with the Biodigital Architecture Master’s Degree and with the Genetic Architectures Office. There we learn & teach, we make research and we design: Knowing that there are sufficient differential parameters to predict a complete age’s change. Today, after the first decade of our new Century, it is time to explain, to check, to discuss, fascinations, inspirations, experiences, that the graduates of these Research Group, Master’s Degree and Architecture Office have done in the developing of this biodigital architecture and genetics, up to now.

Description: Michel Rojkind was born in Mexico city, where he studied Architecture and Urban Planning at the Universidad Iberoamericana (1989-1994). After working on his own for several years, he teamed up with Isaac Broid and Miquel Adria to establish Adria+Broid+Rojkind (1992-2002).

With the idea of exploring new challenges that address contemporary society, of designing compelling experiences that go beyond mere functionalyti, and of connecting at a deeper level with the inticacies of each project, in 2002 he establishes an independent firm: Rojkind Arquitectos, recognized by Architectural Record in 2005 as one of the then best “Design Vanguard” firms.
Description: The Cognitive Cities Conference (#CoCities) aims to bring the vibrant global conversation about the future of cities to Germany. We believe that collaboration and diversity lead to the best results. By inviting bright minds with different perspectives, it is our ambition to enable not only an in-depth exchange about the current state of affairs, but also to foster new projects and contribute to the ongoing global discussion. We see CoCities as a platform for exchange and mutual inspiration. We invite urban planners, designers, technology geeks, environmental experts, public officials, urban gardening enthusiasts and cultural influencers to be part of the conversation. We can only make our cities more livable if we work together to improve them.
Description: A retrospective exhibition honoring Stephen H. Kanner FAIA, Founder and President of the A+D Architecture and Design Museum > Los Angeles and the work of Kanner Architects. A third generation architect and principal of Kanner Architects, Stephen was a native Angeleno known for his reinterpretation of Southern California modernism and for his unique imprint on LA’s urban landscape. His contributions to the Los Angeles built environment reach from Santa Monica to East Los Angeles, as his firm completed more than 150 projects throughout the city under his leadership. In addition, Kanner earned national and international recognition with residential projects around the world and, most notably, PUMA retail stores worldwide.

Stephen Kanner’s passion for architecture extended beyond his practice. In 2005, Kanner served as president of AIA Los Angeles, as well as serving six years on the Westwood Design Review Board. One of Stephen’s proudest community accomplishments was co-founding the Architecture and Design Museum > Los Angeles. He envisioned a museum dedicated to progressive architecture and design, celebrating not only the design breakthroughs of the city but also the accomplishments of the national and international design scenes.

The official public memorial service for Stephen H. Kanner, FAIA, will be held on November 4, 2010 at a location near the A+D Museum. The exhibit opening reception will follow. Location of memorial service and event times to be announced. The show continues until Jan 16, 2011.

If you wish to attend the memorial service and/or the restrospective opening reception please RSVP by October 28th to rsvp@aplusd.org.
Description:
In physics the term ‘plasma’ describes a particular state of matter in which energy is readily conducted through a material – the fluid spaces of Plasma Studio’s architecture work by the same principle. Folding space into space, the architects draw landscapes into buildings, streets into facades, inside to outside. Transformative tectonics set spaces, planes and bodies into unforeseen relationships that challenge conventional topographies and spatial codes.

For the last 10 years the office, currently based in London, Southern Tyrol and Beijing, has been widely recognized as one of the leading international architecture and design practices of the emerging generation. From small scale installations to large scale master planning, Plasma Studio`s projects bear strongly the mark of a digital design process. Propelled by the partners’ academic research and teaching at the Architectural Association in London. Plasma Studio develops architectural solutions by mediating between the scales of topography & context on the one hand, and sensory & physical relationships on the other. Their holistic design process enables an elastic response to completely varied contextual conditions and assignments. The exhibition at the DAZ presents their characteristic approach within a jump in scale; from built projects in Europe to recent work-in-progress planning in China.

Plasma Studio
Plasma Studio was founded by Eva Castro and Holger Kehne in London in 1999. They are cofounders of GroundLab, an emerging international practice of Landscape Urbanism and since 2002 both teach at the Architectural Association. Eva Castro is the director of the MA Landscape Urbanism programme. Holger Kehne is the Unit Master of the Diploma Unit 12. Currently the two hold positions as Honorary Professors at Xi’an University of Architecture and Technology in China. Eva Castro studied architecture and urbanism at the Universidad Central de Venezuela and subsequently completed the Graduate Design programme under Jeff Kipnis at the AA. Holger Kehne graduated in architecture at the Münster School of Architecture in Germany and at the University of East London. Since 2003 the architect Ulla Hell is Associated Partner of Plasma Studio and represents the second office location in Sesto near Bolzano, Italy. She studied at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, and the TU Delft and TU Eindhoven in the Netherlands.
