Nicknamed the “Blue Volcano”, Njiric+ Arhitekti’s large stadium is designed to push the boundary of “human experiences of public spaces.” The overwhelming built form creates a presence in the city that distinguishes it as a new landmark for the area. The stadium was conceived not as a building typology but rather as a topography. Using the natural undulation of the landscape, the new civic arena is housed within an artificial hill made of recycled rubber and blue pigment sprayed onto corrugated aluminium sheets.

INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA – The new 300-room, five-star-rated Sheraton Incheon Hotel recently opened in New Songdo City, Korea, offering a new state-of-the-art facility in the heart of a new urban center. The new 25-story hotel is adjacent to the city’s new Convention Center, the Northeast Asia Trade Tower and a large retail mall. HOK provided architectural design, landscape design and sustainable design services for the new 500,000-square-foot, LEED® certified hotel.

The winners for the international architecture competition Extension Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland have been announced. The jury decided to award the project of Swiss architects Christ & Gantenbein the 1st prize. The 2nd prize goes to fellow Swiss firm Diener & Diener. Both project teams have now been invited to further develop their very highly regarded proposals before the final decision will be made. Basel’s art museum urgently depends on an extension of its premises since consistent lack of space makes it currently impossible to exhibit numerous pieces of its renowned collection. The Holcim Forum is a three-day conference including workshops and site visits. BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group and a team of consultants have won the largest ever commission on the Faroe Islands for a 19,200 m2 Education Center in Torshavn. In collaboration with Fuglark, Lemming & Eriksson, Sámal Johannesen, Martin E. Leo and KJ Elrad, BIG will design the new Education Center situated on a hillside on the outskirts of Torshavn, to serve as a base for coordination and future development of all educational programs in the region.
As the largest educational building project in the country’s history, the institution combines Faroe Islands Gymnasium, Torshavns Technical College and Business College of Faroe Islands in one building, housing 1,200 students and 300 teachers.
